Diploma in Professional Cinematography

Successful graduates of this course are eligible for CEF reimbursement of 80% of tuition fee subject to a maximum of HK$10,000.

(Students must meet the attendance rate of 80% or above and satisfy the academic requirements prescribed by the faculty in order to be awarded the Diploma of Graduation. Outstanding graduates can be offered assistance in job placement in HKFA affiliated production companies.)

Designed to meet the increasing demand of professionalism in motion picture photography by the film industry, the entire program aims at equipping the student with the theories and practical skills in every aspect of Professional Cinematography with the use of Arriflex 16mm, 35mm cameras, in addition to the operation of video cameras such as Betacam, DVCam and HDV etc. Also included is the training of the operation of the popular Steadicam taught only at the H K Film Academy in Hong Kong.

 

Course Curriculum:

1. Structure and Operation of the Camera; Loading and Unloading.

2. Types and Structure of the Lens; Choice of Focal Length.

3. Exposure: Film Speed (ISO), Shutter Speed and Aperture.

4. Depth-of-Field;Long-Take & Deep-Focus versus Montage.

5. Film Stock and Characteristics: Study of Kodak and Fuji.

6. Composition: Subject, Object, Foreground and Background.

7. Aspect Ratio: Composition Treatments of 4:3 and Wide Screen

8. Camera Movements and Angles: Theories and Practice.

9. Lighting Techniques: Skills and Practice.

10. Aesthetics of Color: Color Temp, White Balance, Use of Filters.

11. Creating Dramatic Mood by use of Contrast, Keys and Tones.

12. Realist and Expressionist use of Shots and Movements.

13. Special Effects: Blue (Green) Screen, Chroma Key.

14. Use of Fast/Slow Motion; Operation of Steadicam.

15. Cinematic Styles: Study of Hollywood, European and Asian Films.
